Following her appointment as psychologist for Team South Africa at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Dr Koketjo Tsebe has recently been appointed as Chairperson of the High-Performance Psychology Working Group of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC).
The renowned sports psychologist is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at Unisa and a practising psychologist in Centurion.
Dr Tsebe will form part of a team that is representative of SASCOC’s key stakeholders.
She has also been assigned to support the Proteas Women at the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, set to be hosted jointly by India and Sri Lanka in September.
Dr Tsebe’s passion for sports psychology has been recognised both locally and internationally, earning her multiple awards, including being named as one of Inside Education’s top 100 South African Shining Stars in 2024, and receiving the Limpopo MEC Award for Sports Psychology.
She has also been recognised in the Mail and Guardian’s list of 200 Young South Africans in the sports category.
Tsebe also serves as board member for Boxing South Africa, appointed by former Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Zizi Kodwa.
She is also a member of the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport Anti-Doping Appeals Board, appointed by former Minister Nathi Mthethwa.
Dr Tsebe says she is ready to take on the challenge and is grateful for the appointment.
“My experiential learning through being actively involved in the sports psychology field has turned into a trailblazing experience, which is fulfilling and humbling.
“Psychological support for various South African sporting codes is essential to ensure optimal performance.
“Essentially, performance rests on four pillars: physical, mental, tactical and technical.
“The mental aspect is crucial because it entails mindset, attitude, confidence and motivation. By working with different codes, we can support and empower teams with the necessary skills important in sports performance,” Dr Tsebe said.
She continued, saying that she is grateful to Unisa for providing the platform to help the nation’s athletes.
“Unisa is a university that produces ground-breaking, innovative, practical and applicable knowledge that continuously shapes me as a lecturer and mentor.
“It’s a place where pioneering leaders and innovators are nurtured and developed.
“I am grateful to my family and friends for their continuous support, and to SASCOC for recognising my skillset and capabilities through this appointment.”
In the past, she has worked at the following institutions:
– Thaba Tshwane Military Hospital
– Steve Biko Academic Hospital
– The South African Police Services
– Tshwane Rehabilitation Hospital
Currently, she consults inpatients at Zwavelstream Clinic and Mediclinic Medforum.
