Who is Cameron Dickey? Five things to know about the Texas Tech RB

Before the 2025 season began, Texas Tech took a hit at running back when USC transfer Quinten Joyner went down with an ACL tear. With Joyner out, the spotlight shifted toward players like Cameron Dickey and J’Koby Williams at the position.

While Dickey and Williams have impressed early in the season, Dickey has stood out as Tech’s leading rusher. Through six games, Dickey has posted 593 yards on the ground and nine total touchdowns.

Here are five things to know about Dickey:

Before he went to Lubbock, Dickey was a multi-faceted standout at Crockett High School in Austin. He was on Crockett’s varsity squad for four years, lining up at quarterback and other spots.

Dickey finished his high school career with 2,963 passing yards and 33 touchdown passes. He also ran for 4,065 yards and 61 scores on the ground. On the defensive side, he posted 247 tackles, seven interceptions, six pass breakups and four forced fumbles.

According to 247Sports, Dickey was a three-star recruit in the class of 2024.

Like many high school athletes, Dickey tried his hand at various sports throughout his time at Crockett. He competed in track and field and suited up for his school’s basketball and baseball teams.

According to Texas Tech, Dickey competed in the 100 meters, along with the 4×100 and 4×200-meter relays. He was also a long jumper.

Dickey played a key role in Tech’s 42-17 blowout win over Kansas on Oct. 11. The running back surpassed the 100-yard mark for the first time in his collegiate career, and he did it in impressive fashion.

Dickey finished the game with 263 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. According to Texas Tech, that was the fifth-best single-game rushing performance in program history.

Dickey is earning plenty of praise for his high level of play in 2025. The true sophomore already looks like one of the country’s top running backs and has time to develop before he plays at the next level.
