Buying a burger in February could stock local food banks

Amid record food bank use, Canada Beef is running its Burger It Forward campaign throughout February.

For each feature burger sold at the 357 participating Canadian restaurants, Canada Beef is donating the equivalent of one meal to Food Banks Canada, up to a maximum of 20,000 meals.

“The need for food banks has doubled in six years, and despite ongoing challenges, Food Banks Canada continues to meet growing demand. Canada Beef is proud to support that effort through Burger It Forward,” said Canada Beef’s Kelly Hyde in a Thursday statement.

In March 2025, Canada’s food banks had almost 2.2 million visits — the highest number ever recorded, according to Food Banks Canada.

In Alberta, 103 restaurants are taking part in Burger It Forward. A list of the participating Alberta restaurants, along with the feature burger they’re each offering, can be found here.

As part of the campaign, Alberta Beef Producers is donating $1,000 to both the Calgary Food Bank and Edmonton’s Food Bank.

Food banks across Alberta have seen an increase in visits. According to Food Banks Canada’s HungerCount 2025 report, food bank visits in the province jumped by almost 22 per cent in 2025 compared to a year earlier — and have risen by 134 per cent since 2019.

Lethbridge Food Bank executive director Valerie Lazicki said Thursday the need has risen in the southern Alberta city, as has the cost of non-perishable food items for its hampers.

In 2024, the food bank’s hamper count was 9,555, and in 2025 that climbed by about 24 per cent.

The Lethbridge food bank has been able to meet the need thanks to a “strong, supportive” community, said Lazicki.

“We couldn’t do it without the donations from the community,” she said.
