A council says it stands ready to consider any plans to formally recognise and celebrate the life of former boxing champion Ricky Hatton. It follows the launch of a petition hoping to secure backing for a statue of 'The Hitman' in his hometown of Hyde, Tameside.

Hatton was found dead by his manager at his home in Gee Cross, Hyde, last Sunday morning. He was 46 and his death isn't being treated as suspicious by police.

Tameside Council has now released a statement to the Manchester Evening News honouring one of Greater Manchester's most famous sons.

A spokesperson said: "We are happy to consider and understand how Ricky Hatton’s career and contribution to the community can be recognised in Tameside. This needs to be done at the appropriate time when the family can be involved in any discussions."

Council leader, councillor Eleanor Wills, meanwhile, said Hatton had 'inspired countless people with his generosity and strong sense of community'.

As a book of condolence was opened at Hyde Town Hall on Wednesday, Coun Wills said: "I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Ricky last weekend. Ricky was a local lad who was fiercely proud of his roots.

"Though he achieved remarkable success on the global sporting stage, his heart remained firmly with his hometown of Hyde and the community that shaped him.

"He inspired countless people with his generosity and strong sense of community. Ricky was selfless, as he was always wanting to give back to the place he called home. Just last December, he enthusiastically supported our Shop Local campaign, encouraging people to support Tameside town centres and businesses.

"My heartfelt condolences go out to Ricky’s family, friends, and all those in our community who are grieving. Ricky is a national treasure, and his legacy will live on in Tameside, remembered with deep pride and affection."

The development follows comments over a tribute to Hatton made by the mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.

Mr Burnham said the city would give consideration on how best to honour Hatton’s memory properly in the weeks and months ahead, but hasn't elaborated further.

The Hatton family, meanwhile, released a new statement on Wednesday, saying details of a memorial service are due to be announced in due course. In it they said Hatton 'was in a good place' and 'excited for the future'.

He was due to fly out to Dubai to promote a comeback flight and was planning a celebration over there with his daughters.

The family said: "Richard had spoken to his family and his team in the days and weeks before the weekend. He had dinner with his girls on Friday night, and Richard was not alone in life or in the days before the weekend. We are all in shock at the events that unfolded over the weekend.

"The outpouring of grief and love from the nation and worldwide shows how much Richard was loved. It will, in time, be something that gives us all some comfort and pride. Details of a memorial service will likely follow, but in the meantime we would all be grateful if the privacy of the family and Richard's memory be respected."

The book of condolence – which will ultimately be presented to the family as a gift – will be open to sign at Hyde Town Hall Monday to Friday between 7am and 5.30pm.
