Allianz Life, based in Minneapolis and owned by German financial services group Allianz SE, said the attacker used a social engineering technique to obtain personally identifiable information.

“The threat actor was able to obtain personally identifiable data related to the majority of Allianz Life’s customers, financial professionals, and select Allianz Life employees,” the company said in a statement. “We took immediate action to contain and mitigate the issue and notified the FBI.”

The breach was limited to Allianz Life’s systems in the United States, and there is no indication other Allianz entities were affected. The insurer said there was no evidence that its core network or policy administration systems were accessed.

The compromised system was a customer relationship management platform operated by a third party, according to the reports. Allianz Life has reported the incident to several authorities, including the FBI and the attorney general’s office in Maine. A regulatory filing in that state confirmed the breach had been discovered on July 17 and stated that affected individuals would receive 24 months of credit monitoring and identity theft protection.

While the exact number of affected individuals has not been disclosed, the company said it had started reaching out to those impacted.

In social engineering attacks, hackers often impersonate trusted parties to manipulate individuals into revealing access credentials or sensitive information.

A spokesperson for Allianz Life, Brett Weinberg, declined to provide further details, citing the ongoing investigation.

Allianz Life, formerly North American Life and Casualty, was acquired by Allianz SE in 1979. The company employs around 2,000 staff in the US, primarily based in Minnesota. It is one of five Allianz subsidiaries operating in North America. Globally, Allianz SE serves more than 125 million customers.

Related Stories

Microsoft SharePoint breach puts insurance market on alert as clients scramble to contain damage

Global cybersecurity insurance market to double by 2030

Fetching comments… Please enable JavaScript to view the comments powered by Disqus.

LATEST NEWS

                     MERGERS & ACQUISITIONS

Carriers pull back on M&A as macro challenges bite – Clyde & Co

                     CYBER

Allianz Life data breach exposes 1.4 million customers

                     INSURANCE NEWS

Carriers must work with brokers and risk managers to anticipate risks

                     INSURANCE NEWS

Premium squeeze puts brokers in the spotlight as R&W claims rise

                     CATASTROPHE & FLOOD

California court to review legality of FAIR Plan wildfire surcharges

Breach came one day after a malicious threat actor gained access By Josh Recamara
Jul 28, 2025 Share Personal data belonging to the majority of Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America’s 1.4 million customers has been compromised in a cyberattack, the company has confirmed.
The breach, which affected a third-party cloud-based system used by the insurer, was discovered on July 17, one day after a “malicious threat actor” gained access.
